    Overview

Campania was Rome’s Riviera, a thriving, cultured playground for the rich and famous on the beautiful shores of the Bay of Naples. But in AD 79 a vast swathe of the region was devastated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, obliterating not only Pompeii but a whole landscape bustling with human activity. That single cataclysmic event created a huge area of unparalleled value for archaeology, where new discoveries of breath-taking detail are still being made.

In this tour we include the most recently discovered and newly-opened sites not just at Pompeii but from across the wider Campania region too, uncovering the story of  a myriad of towns, villas, farms, and cultural and recreational centres beyond Pompeii’s walls. By getting off the beaten track to lesser-known sites such as Stabia and Boscoreale, we build up a picture of how this whole favoured riviera operated and thrived, with fascinating insights into the daily lives of both the ordinary and the elite.

The tour also includes the magnificent site of Paestum, on the coast south of Pompeii, where we see not only one of the most striking and best-preserved set of Greek temples from anywhere in the ancient world, but where we have also arranged for special access to the museum’s storerooms. Here we are treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the wonderfully painted tombs which are the really unique aspect of this site, and which give us precious information about the origins of Roman culture.

This is classical antiquity at its most coherent and compelling. There is no other region in the world where you can conjure up the ancient past with such clarity, and with magnificent scenery to match. We do it all from a single hotel located right beside Pompeii’s ancient city walls, and in the company of an expert who has actually excavated here, so you can be fully immersed not only in the story but also how we come to know it.
