Itinerary

DAY 1: UK/ATHENS: Met on your arrival at Athens airport and transferred to your comfortable, well-located city hotel for one night’s bed & breakfast accommodation. Your tour director can help you get acquainted with your surroundings this evening. Tomorrow we begin a journey through ancient and rural Greece, setting the stage for Athens where we return for the final three nights.

DAY 2: ELEUSIS, CORINTH & NEMEA:
Begin with Eleusis, just outside Athens and the main centre of the Eleusinian mysteries, a cult of fertility and afterlife in honour of Demeter and Persephone. Continue over the spectacular Corinth Canal to Ancient Corinth, once a flourishing centre of commerce which became famous for the cosmopolitan and decadent living at which Saint Paul addressed his best-known epistle. A short drive then brings you to Nemea, where mythology placed the slaying of the lion by Herakles, and where recent excavations have revealed the stadium which hosted the prestigious Nemean Games. Nearby is the charming town of Nafplion, where your hotel provides two nights dinner, bed and breakfast. The cobbled streets and picturesque waterfront of Nafplion are ideal for an evening stroll.

DAY 3: MYCENAE, TYRINS & EPIDAURUS: Let myth and reality converge as you explore the Argolid region, home to the Bronze Age palaces of Mycenaean kings and the heroes of the Trojan War. See Mycenae itself, with its famous Lion Gate, and its lesser known neighbour at Tyrins, with its massive ‘Cyclopean’ walls of 1400 BC. In the afternoon visit the peaceful sanctuary of Epidaurus, an important centre of ancient medicine, today an extensive archaeological site with a superbly preserved 4th century BC theatre where drama brought mythology to life.

DAY 4: MEGALOPOLIS, BASSAE & ARCADIA: Get off the beaten track today with a spectacular journey through the mountainous countryside of Arcadia, part of old, unspoilt Greece and the rural idyll of romantic painters and poets. Visit two archaeological sites, Megalopolis and Bassae, both rare treats missed by most holidaymakers. At Bassae, you experience an intimate encounter with one of the most complete examples of a classical temple from anywhere in the Greek world. The day ends at Olympia, your base for the next two nights with dinner, bed and breakfast.

DAY 5: OLYMPIA: With the whole day in Olympia there is ample time to appreciate this iconic archaeological site and its two great museums. Trace the origin and history of the Olympic Games, enter the original Olympic stadium, see where the eternal flame burned symbolically in the hearth for over one thousand years, and admire the Temple of Olympian Zeus, home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

DAY 6: THE CORINTHIAN GULF & DELPHI: Leave Olympia and head for Delphi, the most important cultural and diplomatic centre of the ancient Greek world, famed for the wisdom of its oracle. Begin your exploration with a visit to the wonderful archaeological museum, packed full of works of art discovered on the site. You also see the small sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, and the Kastelian spring where enquirers would purify themselves before approaching the oracle. Rest overnight with dinner, bed and breakfast in the quiet village of Delphi, in preparation for tomorrow’s visit to the oracle itself.

DAY 7: DELPHI & THE NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN ATHENS: This morning we visit the famous Delphic oracle, dramatically sited on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Here the ancients communicated with the gods and received their divine wisdom through the Pythia, a strangely-possessed prophetess. After our ‘consultation’, we head into Athens and the National Archaeological Museum, one of the foremost museums of the world. Its collections span Neolithic to Roman times, presenting a visual feast of Greek art from beginning to end. Then settle into your well-appointed and conveniently-located hotel in Athens for 3 night’s bed and breakfast.

DAY 8: ATHENS ACROPOLIS, ACROPOLIS MUSEUM & AGORA: Our included tour of Athens begins at the state-of-the-art New Acropolis Museum, which focuses on finds from the Athenian Acropolis, the religious heart of the ancient city. A short walk then takes you up the Acropolis itself to the Parthenon, the crowning glory of classical architecture with superb panoramic views of Athens. We continue to the ancient Athenian Agora, the civic and commercial centre where democracy was born. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or continue to explore Athens. Your tour director can suggest plenty of things to do, perhaps even a traditional taverna with some live Greek music and dancing in the evening.

DAY 9: ATHENS OR OPTIONAL EXCURSION: Today is free for you to continue exploring the city, or to join one of two optional excursions which we have chosen for their popular appeal. One option is a full-day cruise to the Saronic Islands, a great opportunity to island-hop, relax and soak up the sun. The other option is a half-day visit to romantic Cape Sounion, with its beautiful Temple of Poseidon commanding fantastic views of the Aegean Sea. Your tour director will provide full details.

DAY 10: DEPARTURE: You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport for your flight home, or why not stay longer and make the most of your time in Greece – feel free to ask us for information and ideas.
